Flu Shot in Brampton: Benefits, Eligibility, Effectiveness & Availability

Flu Shot in Brampton Benefits, Side Effects & Where to Go

Ontario’s 2026 flu vaccination program provides free flu shots to people aged 6 months and older who live, work or study in the province. According to the Ontario government’s flu guidance, high-risk and priority groups have been eligible since the week of September 28, while the general public becomes eligible on October 26.

In Brampton, flu shots are available through family doctors, nurse practitioners, Peel Public Health clinics and participating pharmacies. Pharmacies can administer flu shots to people aged 2 and older.

Call ahead to check whether the vaccine is in stock and whether an appointment is needed, as recommended in Ontario’s flu shot guidance.

How the Flu Shot Works and Why It Matters

The flu vaccine helps your immune system recognize and respond to influenza. It contains antigens that trigger an immune response, helping your body recognize the virus if you’re exposed to it later, according to the Government of Canada. Protection takes about two weeks to develop. Since flu viruses change over time, Ontario recommends a new flu shot each fall

Getting a flu shot lowers your risk of catching the flu and developing serious complications. It can also reduce the chance of spreading influenza to others. However, it does not protect against COVID-19 or RSV.

Flu vaccination can also reduce flu-related doctor visits and hospital stays. Ontario confirms that you can receive your flu shot during the same visit as a COVID-19 vaccine, or before or after it

How Effective Is the Flu Vaccine?

The flu vaccine is about 50% effective at preventing influenza in healthy adults, according to Toronto Public Health. Its effectiveness varies from season to season and depends on factors such as your age, health and how well the vaccine matches the strains circulating that year, explains the Government of Canada.

Even when the match is not exact, getting vaccinated can still help protect you against the flu.

What’s in the Flu Shot, and Is It Safe for People With Allergies?

Some flu vaccines contain an adjuvant, a substance added to a vaccine that helps the recipient develop an improved immune response. Ontario lists the adjuvanted flu vaccine as an option for adults aged 65 and older.

An egg allergy does not prevent you from getting a flu shot. People with egg allergies can receive the full dose of any flu vaccine approved for their age, according to Toronto Public Health. Tell your healthcare provider about any allergies or previous reactions to a vaccine before getting vaccinated.

Flu Shot Side Effects and Who Should Check Before Vaccination

Side effects are usually mild and go away within a few days, and you can’t get the flu from the vaccine, according to the Government of Canada. Toronto Public Health lists these common ones:

  • pain, redness or swelling where the needle went in
  • headache, fever, muscle aches or joint pain
  • feeling tired
  • in children, irritability, drowsiness or loss of appetite

Serious allergic reactions are rare. Stay at the vaccination site for at least 15 minutes after your shot so a healthcare provider can monitor you and respond quickly if a reaction occurs, as advised by the Government of Canada.

The risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare condition affecting the nerves, after flu vaccination is very low, at about one case per million doses, according to Toronto Public Health. GBS is more likely after an influenza infection.

If you have had anaphylaxis after a flu vaccine or developed GBS within six weeks of a previous flu shot, speak with your healthcare provider before getting another dose.

Who Should Get a Flu Shot, and Where Can They Get One?

A flu shot is especially important for people at higher risk of complications, including adults aged 65 and older, pregnant people, young children, long-term care residents, First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, and those with certain chronic conditions. See Ontario’s flu guidance for more information.

Age Where To Get It
6 months to under 2 Doctor, nurse practitioner or some public health units (not pharmacies)
2 to 64 Doctor, nurse practitioner, some public health units or participating pharmacies
65 and older Same as above; adjuvanted or high-dose vaccine preferred if available

Children aged 6 months to under 9 years who have never had a flu shot may need two doses, at least four weeks apart. Check the Government of Canada’s guidance for details.

Adults aged 65 and older may receive a high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine, which is designed to provide stronger protection in older adults. If these vaccines are unavailable, Ontario advises that getting another age-appropriate flu vaccine is better than remaining unvaccinated. Ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider which flu vaccine is recommended for your age.
